Do I Need Urgent Care or Emergency Care?

When you or your child suddenly becomes unwell or injured, it can be hard to know where to go for care today. A painful ankle after weekend sport, a feverish child, sudden ear pain, worsening asthma symptoms or a cut that may need treatment can feel too urgent to wait for a routine GP appointment.

Some symptoms need Emergency care straight away, but others may be suitable for same-day walk-in assessment, especially when they are urgent but not life-threatening.

SmartCare UrgentCare provides walk-in urgent care in Springfield Central for urgent, non-life-threatening illness and injury. With Emergency Specialist-led care and on-site diagnostics available if needed during assessment, patients can attend during opening hours without an appointment.

What Is Walk-In Urgent Care?

Walk-in urgent care means you can attend for medical assessment without booking an appointment first. It can be useful when symptoms develop suddenly, an injury happens during a busy week or weekend, or you cannot access your regular GP when assessment is needed - TODAY.

When Can SmartCare UrgentCare Help?

SmartCare UrgentCare may be suitable when an illness or injury requires medical attention today, but there are no signs of a life-threatening emergency. We see many South-West Brisbane patients for concerns such as:

  • Sprains, strains and sports injuries
  • Suspected fractures
  • Cuts, wounds and minor burns
  • Fevers and respiratory illness
  • Ear pain and sore throat symptoms
  • Vomiting or dehydration
  • Urinary symptoms
  • Bites, rashes and minor allergic reactions
  • Acute back, joint or muscle pain
  • Mild to moderate asthma symptoms, that are not severe

For parents managing a sick child, shift workers unable to wait several days for an appointment, or active adults injured during weekend sport, walk-in access provides a valuable option when medical intervention is needed sooner rather than later.

This can include a child with fever who needs medical review, a painful ankle after sport, a cut that may need cleaning or closure, sudden ear pain, urinary symptoms that are becoming difficult to manage or mild to moderate asthma symptoms.

What About Asthma or Allergic Reactions?

Asthma symptoms and minor allergic reactions can be assessed and treated at SmartCare UrgentCare when urgent medical attention is needed but the person is not experiencing emergency warning signs.

For asthma symptoms, assessment may be suitable when you or your child has wheezing, coughing or breathing symptoms that require medical review, but there are no severe breathing difficulties or other signs of a severe asthma attack.

For allergic reactions, symptoms such as a mild localised rash or mild swelling may need assessment, especially if symptoms are uncomfortable, new or not settling.

Severe asthma symptoms or anaphylaxis are medical emergencies. Call 000 immediately for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips or face, collapse, tongue or throat swelling and sudden breathing problems following an allergic reaction.

When Is Emergency Care Needed?

SmartCare UrgentCare is for urgent, non-life-threatening illness and injury. Life-threatening or time-critical symptoms need Emergency care.

Call 000 or immediately head to your nearest Emergency Department for symptoms such as:

  • Severe breathing difficulty
  • Severe or intense chest pain
  • Signs of stroke
  • Collapse, seizures or unconsciousness
  • Major trauma
  • Uncontrollable bleeding
  • Major or severe burns
  • Severe allergic reaction or anaphylaxis
  • An acute asthma attack
  • Babies under 6 months with a fever of 38°C or higher

If these warning signs are not present, walk-in urgent care may be a suitable option when an illness or injury still needs assessment today.

What To Expect During Your SmartCare UrgentCare Visit

When you arrive at SmartCare UrgentCare, our experienced and emergency specialist-led team will assess your symptoms or injury and determine the next steps based on your medical needs.

Depending on your condition, care might include wound treatment, symptom management, medication, medical advice, testing or imaging, follow-up recommendations or referral to hospital or relevant specialist when required.

On-site X-ray, CT, ultrasound and pathology are available if needed during your assessment, with diagnostics bulk billed for eligible Medicare card holders.
