Staff Specialist Emergency Medicine

BBiomedSc | MBBS | FACEM

Dr Shannon Baker is an experienced Emergency Medicine physician with a background in managing a wide range of acute illnesses and injuries. He has worked in several major Queensland hospitals throughout his emergency medicine training, including the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Emergency and Trauma Centre, QEII Emergency Department, and Queensland Children’s Hospital Emergency Department. He now works as an Emergency Staff Specialist at Hervey Bay and Maryborough Hospitals, alongside his role at SmartCare UrgentCare.

Shannon enjoys the breadth and problem-solving nature of emergency medicine. He views the specialty as being “generalists with a specialist’s edge” — doctors who are comfortable tackling almost any problem, quickly identifying serious issues, and helping patients move toward the right solution for their care.

Originally from Warwick in regional Queensland, Shannon worked a variety of jobs before deciding to pursue tertiary education and eventually medicine as a career. He has worked in hospitality, delivery driving, as a postie, and in various manual labour roles. These experiences shaped his practical, down-to-earth approach and help him connect with patients from all walks of life.

Outside of work, Shannon is a father of two young boys and enjoys tinkering with cars and motorbikes, tackling DIY projects around the house, and the occasional attempt at skateboarding.

He brings the same practical, “jack-of-all-trades” mindset to medicine that he does to life outside the hospital — focused on understanding the problem, finding the right solution, and helping people get back on their feet as quickly as possible.

Known for his calm and practical approach to urgent medical problems, Shannon is passionate about providing clear, practical care and helping patients feel confident they are in the right place to receive timely treatment and expert advice.

It’s this practical, solution-focused approach that makes the following superhero comparison a natural fit. If Shannon were a (non-super) superhero, he’d probably be MacGyver. Emergency physicians don’t rely on a single superpower — instead, they draw on a broad range of skills, quick thinking, and the ability to solve problems with the tools available. Much like MacGyver, Shannon enjoys the challenge of working out what’s going on, stabilising the situation, and helping patients move toward the right solution for their care.
