Types of musculoskeletal and back pain
Acute Musculoskeletal Injuries
Injuries like sprains, strains, fractures, and contusions. Treatment depends on the severity of the injury and may include rest, ice, compression, elevation, immobilisation, and physical therapy.
Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain
Refers to persistent or recurrent pain lasting for three months or longer, often associated with underlying conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or fibromyalgia.
Mechanical Back Pain
Also known as non-specific low back pain, it is the most common type of back pain and may be caused by lifting heavy objects, bending or twisting, bad posture, or prolonged sitting or standing.
Sciatica
Refers to pain that radiates along the sciatica nerve, which runs from the lower back down the back of each leg. Often caused by a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or degenerative disc disease.
Spondylosis or Spondylolisthesis
Spondylosis refers to degenerative changes in the spine (osteoarthritis, spinal disc degeneration, and bone spurs). Spondylolisthesis occurs when a vertebra slips out of position, often due to a stress fracture or degenerative changes in the spine.
