Common infections
Urinary Tract Infections (UTI)
- Lower UTIs (Cystitis): Primarily affect the bladder and urethra. They are typically uncomplicated and respond well to antibiotic treatment.
- Upper UTIs (Pyelonephritis): These occur when the infection moves from the bladder to the kidneys. They are more serious and may require intravenous (IV) antibiotics and close monitoring.
- Complicated UTIs: Occur in people with underlying medical conditions or risk factors that increase the risk of treatment failure or complications. Complications may include kidney damage, sepsis, urinary tract obstructions, or recurrent infections. These UTIs may require specialised treatment approaches.
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI)
- Chlamydia: One of the most common bacterial STIs, it can affect the genital tract, urethra, cervix, rectum, and throat. Can typically be treated with antibiotics.
- Gonorrhoea: Another common bacterial STI, usually affecting the genital tract, urethra, cervix, rectum and throat. Can typically be treated with antibiotics.
- Genital Herpes: A viral STI caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Recurrent outbreaks may occur, triggered by stress, illness, or sexual activity. Can be managed with antiviral medications.
- HIV/AIDS: A viral STI that attacks the immune system. Is transmitted through contact with infected blood, semen, vaginal fluids, or breast milk. It is treated with antiretroviral therapy.
