Why After-Hours Urgent Care Matters

Most GP clinics operate Monday to Friday during business hours. Some offer Saturday morning sessions. Very few are open on Sunday or public holidays, and almost none operate in the evening.

Yet medical needs do not follow business hours. Injuries, acute illness, and urgent symptoms happen at all times — and they disproportionately happen in the evenings, on weekends, and during school holidays, when children are active and families are together.

The traditional options for after-hours care are limited:

• Hospital emergency department — appropriate for life-threatening conditions, but often involves hours of waiting for non-emergency presentations
• After-hours GP locum services — limited availability, often telephone-first, no onsite imaging
• 13HEALTH or Nurse-on-Call — telephone advice only, cannot examine, diagnose, or treat

Our emergency specialist team provides the clinical assessment and diagnostic capability of a hospital emergency department, in a private clinic environment, without the hospital queue.

Emergency Specialist-Led Care — Not a GP Clinic

SmartCare UrgentCare is not an after-hours GP service. Our team is led by Fellows of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine — emergency specialists with decades of experience across major Queensland hospitals, including the Queensland Children's Hospital, Mater Brisbane, Princess Alexandra Hospital, and Ipswich Hospital.

This means your after-hours presentation is assessed by a doctor whose primary specialisation is acute and urgent care — not a GP providing after-hours cover. For conditions requiring urgent specialist-level assessment, this is a meaningful clinical difference.

Onsite X-Ray, CT and Pathology — Answers the Same Visit

One of the most significant limitations of after-hours GP services is the absence of onsite diagnostic imaging. If you attend an after-hours GP with a suspected fracture, you will be sent to a radiology provider the next day — or told to attend the emergency department.

At SmartCare UrgentCare, X-ray, CT, and pathology are available onsite during your visit. This means:

• Suspected fractures — confirmed or excluded with X-ray during the same visit
• Chest pain — ECG and imaging available for same-visit clinical evaluation
• Infections — pathology for same-day testing and targeted treatment
• Abdominal pain — CT available if clinically indicated

For eligible Medicare cardholders, many imaging and pathology services are bulk billed.

Kids After Hours — Our Team Is Ready

After-hours presentations for children are among the most common at SmartCare UrgentCare. Parents understandably want prompt, expert care when their child is unwell or injured — not a telephone call to a helpline.

Our emergency specialist team includes doctors who trained at the Queensland Children's Hospital and are experienced in paediatric assessment. Children are seen promptly, with onsite X-ray available for injuries and falls. No appointment is needed. Walk in any evening or weekend.

WorkCover and Defence After Hours

Workplace injuries can happen at any time — including evenings and weekends when most GP clinics are closed. SmartCare UrgentCare provides same-day WorkCover assessment, treatment, and documentation 7 days a week.

The facility fee is waived for eligible WorkCover patients. The facility fee is also waived for eligible DVA White Card holders and ADF personnel. Please advise our team on arrival.

SmartCare UrgentCare is a private billing clinic. A consultation fee applies with a Medicare rebate for eligible cardholders. Many onsite imaging and pathology services are bulk billed for eligible Medicare patients.
