Eye Injuries and Foreign Bodies

Eye foreign bodies are one of the most common urgent care presentations — particularly in tradespeople, workshop users, and anyone working with metal, wood, or grinding equipment.

Common Eye Foreign Bodies

  • Metal filings and sparks — from grinding, cutting, and welding
  • Dust, sand, and grit — from outdoor work, sport, or wind
  • Wood chips and sawdust — from woodworking and gardening
  • Insect or organic material — blown into the eye
  • Contact lens problems — trapped, torn, or displaced lenses
  • Chemical splash — cleaning products, workplace chemicals, pool chemicals

When to Seek Urgent Care for an Eye Injury

  • You can feel something in your eye but cannot flush it out with water
  • Your eye is red, watering, and painful after an incident
  • You were grinding, cutting, or welding without eye protection — even if you cannot feel anything, metal fragments may be embedded
  • Chemical has splashed into your eye — flush with water continuously for 20 minutes, then attend immediately
  • Your vision is blurred or changed after an eye injury
  • You have a visible scratch or mark on the surface of your eye
  • You have been hit in the eye — by a ball, fist, elbow, branch, or other object

What We Do for Eye Foreign Bodies

  • Examine the eye using magnification and appropriate lighting
  • Administer anaesthetic eye drops so the examination and removal are comfortable
  • Locate and remove the foreign body — using specialised instruments under magnification
  • Assess for corneal abrasion or damage — a scratch on the surface of the eye
  • Irrigate the eye if contamination is present
  • Prescribe antibiotic eye drops or ointment if indicated
  • Arrange ophthalmology referral if the injury is complex or involves the deeper structures of the eye
EYE EMERGENCY If you have a penetrating eye injury — an object embedded in the eye, not just on the surface — do not attempt to remove it. Cover the eye without pressing on it and call 000 or attend your nearest Emergency Department immediately.

Foreign Bodies in Children — Ears and Nose

Children are curious. Small objects in ears and noses are one of the most common paediatric presentations at SmartCare UrgentCare. Common objects include beads, small toy parts, food items, cotton bud tips, paper, and stones.

Signs your child may have a foreign body in their ear or nose:

  • Complaining of something stuck or a blocked feeling
  • Discharge — particularly foul-smelling or one-sided nasal discharge
  • Pain or discomfort in one ear
  • Reduced hearing on one side
  • Nosebleed from one nostril
  • Visible object — do not attempt to remove it at home, as this often pushes it further in

Our emergency specialist team has the equipment and experience to safely remove foreign bodies from children's ears and noses. In most cases, the object is removed quickly and safely during the same visit.

Splinters, Fish Hooks, and Embedded Objects

Objects embedded in the skin or soft tissue — deep splinters, fish hooks, glass fragments, thorns, and metal shards — require clinical removal when they cannot be safely extracted at home.

Attend SmartCare UrgentCare if:

  • The splinter is deep and you cannot grasp it
  • The splinter has broken off beneath the skin surface
  • A fish hook is embedded — do not attempt to pull a barbed hook out yourself
  • Glass is embedded and you are unsure whether all fragments have been removed — onsite X-ray can confirm
  • The area is showing signs of infection — redness, swelling, warmth, pus

Our emergency specialists remove embedded objects under local anaesthetic. Onsite X-ray is available to confirm removal of radiopaque foreign bodies such as glass and metal.

Workplace Eye Injuries and Foreign Bodies

Eye injuries and foreign body exposure are common in construction, manufacturing, workshop, and trade environments. These may be covered under WorkCover Queensland.
