When Should You Seek Urgent Care for Respiratory Symptoms?

Most colds and mild flu symptoms resolve at home with rest and fluids. Attend SmartCare UrgentCare if:

• Your cough has persisted for more than 7 to 10 days without improvement
• You are coughing up green, yellow, or blood-stained sputum
• You are experiencing shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
• You have a high fever (above 38.5°C) that is not responding to paracetamol or ibuprofen
• Your chest feels tight, heavy, or painful when breathing
• You are wheezing or hearing a rattling sound when you breathe
• You feel significantly unwell — fatigued, unable to eat, or unable to perform normal activities
• You have an underlying condition — asthma, COPD, heart disease, diabetes, or a weakened immune system — and are experiencing respiratory symptoms
• Your child has a barking cough (croup), is breathing rapidly, or is working hard to breathe
• Your infant has a fever with respiratory symptoms — infants under 12 months with fever and respiratory illness should always be assessed

What We Assess and Treat

Influenza (Flu)

Influenza causes sudden onset of fever, body aches, fatigue, headache, and respiratory symptoms. Most people recover at home, but some presentations require medical assessment — particularly when symptoms are severe, prolonged, or the patient has risk factors for complications. Antiviral medication may be beneficial if started within 48 hours of symptom onset.

COVID-19

COVID-19 continues to circulate and can cause symptoms ranging from mild cold-like illness to significant respiratory distress. SmartCare UrgentCare can assess the severity of your symptoms, test for COVID-19 if indicated, and provide management advice including when to seek further care.

Pneumonia

Pneumonia is a lung infection that causes cough, fever, shortness of breath, and chest pain. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. Clinical assessment, onsite chest X-ray, and blood tests allow same-visit diagnosis. Bacterial pneumonia is treated with antibiotics — early treatment improves outcomes.

Bronchitis

Acute bronchitis causes a persistent cough — often productive — following a viral upper respiratory infection. The cough can last 2 to 3 weeks. Clinical assessment can distinguish bronchitis from pneumonia and other conditions that may require different treatment.

Asthma Exacerbation

If your asthma is worsening — increased wheeze, breathlessness, chest tightness, or your reliever inhaler is not controlling symptoms — attend for same-day assessment. Our emergency specialist team can assess severity, provide acute treatment, and adjust your management plan.

Croup (Children)

Croup causes a distinctive barking cough, hoarse voice, and stridor (a harsh sound when breathing in) in young children. It is caused by viral infection of the upper airway. Mild croup can be managed at home, but moderate to severe croup requires medical assessment and treatment — including oral corticosteroids which significantly reduce symptoms. Bronchiolitis (Infants)

Bronchiolitis is a viral lower respiratory infection in infants and young children, most commonly caused by RSV. It causes cough, wheeze, and difficulty feeding. Assessment is important to determine the severity and whether hospital admission is needed.

Whooping Cough (Pertussis)

Whooping cough causes prolonged episodes of severe coughing — often with a characteristic 'whoop' sound on breathing in. It can affect people of any age, even those who have been vaccinated (immunity wanes over time). Assessment, testing, and antibiotic treatment are available at SmartCare UrgentCare.

Onsite Chest X-Ray and Pathology

When respiratory symptoms suggest something more than a simple cold, further investigation is often needed. At SmartCare UrgentCare, you do not need to wait for a GP referral to a separate radiology provider:

• Chest X-ray — available onsite for same-visit assessment of pneumonia, pleural effusion, and other lung pathology
• Blood tests — inflammatory markers, white cell count — to assess infection severity
• Respiratory pathology — COVID-19 testing, influenza testing where indicated

For eligible Medicare cardholders, onsite imaging and pathology are bulk billed.
