Open After School — When Your GP Is Not

Most school injuries happen between 9am and 3pm. By the time you have collected your child, driven home, and assessed the situation, it is typically late afternoon. GP clinics are either closed or fully booked for the day. The alternative is a hospital emergency department — which means a long wait for a non-life-threatening injury.

SmartCare UrgentCare is open after school hours, 7 days a week. Walk in with your child and our emergency specialist team will assess the injury, take an X-ray if clinically indicated, and provide a clear management plan — all in the same visit.

For parents in Brookwater, Augustine Heights, Spring Mountain, Camira, and the broader Springfield corridor, SmartCare UrgentCare is typically 5 to 15 minutes from your child's school.

Onsite X-Ray — No Separate Radiology Appointment

One of the most frustrating aspects of taking a child with a suspected fracture to a GP is being sent to a separate radiology provider for an X-ray — adding hours or days to the diagnostic process, with an anxious child in tow.

At SmartCare UrgentCare, X-ray is available onsite during the same visit. Your child's emergency specialist reviews the images immediately and explains the findings to you. If it is a fracture, management begins the same day — splinting, casting, pain relief, and a follow-up plan. If it is not a fracture, you leave with reassurance and clear next steps.

For eligible Medicare cardholders, X-ray is bulk billed.

Head Injuries and Concussion at School

Head injuries at school — from playground falls, sporting collisions, or accidental impacts — require careful clinical assessment. Not every bump to the head requires medical attention, but certain symptoms warrant prompt evaluation.

Bring your child to SmartCare UrgentCare if after a head injury they have:

• Persistent headache that is not improving
• Dizziness, balance problems, or difficulty walking
• Nausea or vomiting — particularly more than once
• Confusion, unusual drowsiness, or difficulty concentrating
• Behaviour changes — irritability, being unusually quiet or emotional
• Memory problems — not remembering the event

Our emergency specialist team can assess for concussion, determine whether CT imaging is clinically indicated, and provide return-to-school and return-to-sport guidance. Onsite CT is available if needed.

What the School Nurse Needs to Know

If you are a school nurse or first aid officer, SmartCare UrgentCare accepts walk-in presentations directly from school for injured students when a parent or guardian is present or contactable. We provide:

• Same-day assessment by emergency specialists — not a GP or locum
• Onsite X-ray for suspected fractures — no separate radiology referral needed
• Wound closure and management for lacerations
• Concussion assessment with return-to-school guidance
• A discharge summary for the school's records if requested by the parent

Fees

SmartCare UrgentCare is a private billing clinic. A consultation fee applies with a Medicare rebate for eligible cardholders. Onsite X-ray and pathology are bulk billed for eligible Medicare patients. There is no additional charge for after-school or weekend visits.

Facility fee waived for eligible WorkCover Queensland patients. Walk in with your employer's details.

 

DEFENCE & DVA
