What Is a UTI?

A urinary tract infection is a bacterial infection affecting any part of the urinary system — the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra. The majority of UTIs involve the lower urinary tract (bladder and urethra) and are commonly referred to as bladder infections or cystitis.

UTIs are one of the most common infections in Australia, affecting women significantly more often than men. Approximately 1 in 2 women will experience at least one UTI in their lifetime. UTIs also occur in men, children, and older adults, though the presentation and clinical considerations differ.

UTI Treatment

Most uncomplicated UTIs are treated with a short course of antibiotics. Your emergency specialist will prescribe the most appropriate antibiotic based on your symptoms, test results, and any relevant medical history including previous UTIs and antibiotic allergies.

In addition to antibiotics, your emergency specialist may advise:

• Increased fluid intake to help flush bacteria from the urinary tract
• Simple pain relief — paracetamol or anti-inflammatory medication for discomfort
• Urinary alkalinising agents — to reduce burning pain (available from pharmacies)
• Follow-up with your GP if symptoms do not resolve within 48 to 72 hours of starting antibiotics, or if you experience recurrent UTIs

Recurrent UTIs

UTIs in men are less common than in women but should always be taken seriously and assessed promptly. UTIs in men may indicate a more complex underlying cause — including prostate involvement, urinary obstruction, or structural abnormality. UTIs in Children

UTIs in children can present differently from adults. Young children may not be able to describe urinary symptoms and may instead present with:

• Unexplained fever
• Irritability or fussiness
• Poor feeding (in infants)
• Bedwetting in a previously dry child
