What Is an Urgent Care Clinic? A Guide for Springfield and Ipswich Residents
When you or a loved one is suddenly unwell or injured, it can be hard to know where to go. Your GP may be booked out and the problem can’t really wait several days for an appointment, but it also may not be life-threatening where it requires an ambulance or hospital Emergency Department visit. This space in-between is where urgent care can help.
An urgent care clinic provides same-day medical assessment for health issues, from illness to injury, that are urgent but not life-threatening.
SmartCare UrgentCare is a private walk-in urgent care clinic in Springfield Central, supporting patients from Springfield, Greater Springfield, Ripley, Ipswich and surrounding South-West Brisbane communities. Walk-ins are welcome, with no appointment necessary and the clinic is open 10:00am-8:00pm, 7 days.
What Does an Urgent Care Clinic Treat?
Urgent care is designed for problems that need medical assessment today but are not life-threatening, including:
- Sprains, strains or suspected fractures
- Sports injuries
- Minor cuts, wounds, burns and bites
- Fevers and rashes
- Respiratory illness and mild-moderate asthma
- Vomiting and dehydration
- Urinary symptoms
- Ear, nose and throat issues
- Eye concerns
- Migraines
- Back pain
- WorkCover injuries
SmartCare UrgentCare assesses adults and young children to the elderly for urgent, non-life-threatening illness and injury.
How Is Urgent Care Different From a GP?
Your GP is usually the best place for routine health care, repeat prescriptions, ongoing condition management, general check-ups and stable symptoms.
Urgent care is for times when an issue needs attention sooner than the next available GP appointment. For example, a child with a fever who is not improving, a painful ankle after sport, a cut that may need closing, or a cough or chest symptoms that are getting worse.
You do not need a referral to attend SmartCare UrgentCare. You can walk in during opening hours from 10am - 8pm, 7 days a week, including public holidays.
How Is Urgent Care Different from Emergency?
Emergency Departments are for life-threatening or time-critical illness and injury. Please call 000 or go to your nearest Emergency Department for symptoms such as:
- Central or crushing chest pain
- Severe breathing difficulty
- Serious trauma
- Severe or uncontrollable bleeding
- Sudden numbness or paralysis
- Poisoning or envenomation (such as snake or spider bites)
- Altered consciousness
- A baby under 3 months old with a fever of 38℃ or above
- A seriously unwell child
Urgent care is for non-life-threatening concerns that still need same-day assessment and care.
Is Imaging or Testing Available?
Yes, imaging and testing are available, if needed for your assessment, that your clinician may recommend based on your symptoms and examination.
SmartCare UrgentCare has on-site X-ray, CT, ultrasound and pathology available and these diagnostics can be bulk billed for eligible Medicare card holders.
Onsite diagnostics means you don’t need to travel to different facilities, book separate appointments or return another day for results as everything can be completed in the one visit. It is helpful for suspected fractures and some respiratory, urinary, abdominal or infection-related concerns where testing can help guide the next step.
