WorkCover Injuries — Same-Day Treatment, Certification, and Injury Management

When a workplace injury occurs, the injured worker needs three things quickly: medical treatment, WorkCover documentation, and a clear return-to-work plan. In most cases, achieving all three on the same day means attending multiple appointments across multiple providers — a GP for the initial certificate, a radiology clinic for imaging, and then back to the GP for the results.

SmartCare UrgentCare in Springfield Central provides all three in a single walk-in visit. Our emergency specialist team treats the injury, performs onsite X-ray or CT if clinically indicated, issues the certificate of capacity, and prepares the WorkCover documentation — all on the same day, with no appointment needed. The facility fee is waived for eligible WorkCover Queensland patients.

FACILITY FEE The facility fee is waived for eligible WorkCover Queensland patients at SmartCare UrgentCare. Walk in with your employer's details. No appointment needed.

How WorkCover Works — A Quick Guide for Injured Workers

If you have been injured at work in Queensland, WorkCover Queensland provides a no-fault statutory insurance scheme that covers the cost of reasonable medical treatment, rehabilitation, and income support while you recover. Here is what you need to know:

Step 1 — Report the Injury to Your Employer

Tell your employer about the injury as soon as possible. Your employer is legally required to record the injury and, for claims involving more than your employer's excess period, lodge a claim with WorkCover Queensland. Ask your employer for their WorkCover policy number and the name of your direct supervisor — you will need these when you attend for medical treatment.

Step 2 — Attend for Medical Treatment

You are entitled to choose your own treating medical practitioner. You do not need to attend the doctor your employer nominates — you can attend any WorkCover-approved provider, including SmartCare UrgentCare.

Walk in to SmartCare UrgentCare with:

  • Your employer's name and address
  • Your employer's WorkCover policy number (if known)
  • Your supervisor's name
  • A brief description of how the injury occurred
  • Your Medicare card

Our team handles everything from there — treatment, documentation, and certification.

Step 3 — Certificate of Capacity

Your treating doctor issues a certificate of capacity — the document that sets out your fitness for work following the injury. The certificate specifies whether you have:

  • Full capacity — fit to return to all normal duties
  • Current work capacity — fit to return to work with restrictions or modifications (suitable duties)
  • No current work capacity — temporarily unable to work

The certificate of capacity is the foundation of your WorkCover claim. It must be issued by your treating doctor and provided to your employer and WorkCover Queensland. SmartCare UrgentCare issues certificates of capacity on the same day as your initial presentation.

Step 4 — Ongoing Treatment and Review

Depending on your injury, you may need follow-up appointments for ongoing treatment, wound review, repeat imaging, physiotherapy referral, or updated certificates of capacity as your condition improves. SmartCare UrgentCare can provide ongoing WorkCover management, or you may choose to continue your care with your GP — the choice is yours.

What We Treat — Common Workplace Injuries

SmartCare UrgentCare manages a wide range of workplace injuries. The most common WorkCover presentations include:

Musculoskeletal Injuries

  • Back injuries — the most common workplace injury category in Australia. Lifting, manual handling, twisting, and falls
  • Shoulder injuries — overhead work, repetitive strain, falls
  • Knee injuries — slips, trips, falls, kneeling, and twisting
  • Neck and upper back injuries — manual handling, posture-related, motor vehicle incidents
  • Wrist and hand injuries — crush injuries, repetitive strain, falls onto outstretched hands
  • Ankle and foot injuries — falls, uneven surfaces, dropped objects

Fractures

  • Fractures from falls — scaffolding, ladders, wet surfaces, uneven ground
  • Crush injuries — machinery, heavy objects, vehicle incidents
  • Finger and hand fractures — the most common workplace fracture site
  • Foot and toe fractures — dropped objects, heavy vehicle environments

Onsite X-ray at SmartCare UrgentCare means fractures can be diagnosed during the same visit — no separate radiology appointment required.

Lacerations and Wounds

  • Cuts from sharp tools, machinery, glass, or metal
  • Puncture wounds — nails, wire, sharp objects
  • Crush injuries to fingers and hands
  • Burns — thermal burns from hot surfaces, liquids, and flames; chemical burns from workplace chemicals; friction burns from machinery

Wound management including assessment, cleaning, closure (suturing), dressings, and tetanus prophylaxis is available at SmartCare UrgentCare.

Head Injuries

  • Falls from height — ladders, scaffolding, platforms
  • Struck by falling objects — particularly in construction, warehouse, and manufacturing environments
  • Vehicle incidents — motor vehicle, forklift, heavy plant

Onsite CT is available if your emergency specialist determines that imaging is clinically indicated for a workplace head injury.

Eye Injuries

  • Foreign bodies — metal filings, dust, chemical splash
  • Chemical exposure — cleaning products, solvents, industrial chemicals

Eye irrigation and foreign body removal are available at SmartCare UrgentCare.

Other Workplace Presentations

  • Respiratory exposure — dust, fumes, chemical inhalation
  • Insect and animal bites — outdoor work environments
  • Heat-related illness — working in extreme heat conditions
  • Acute stress injuries — following a workplace incident or accident

Why Choose SmartCare UrgentCare for WorkCover?

Facility Fee Waived

The facility fee is waived for eligible WorkCover Queensland patients. You will not be charged an out-of-pocket facility fee for your visit. Treatment is billed directly to WorkCover Queensland.

Emergency Specialist Doctors

Your workplace injury is assessed by a Fellow of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine — a doctor whose primary specialisation is acute injury and illness assessment. Our team includes doctors with specific interests in occupational injuries, sports medicine, and musculoskeletal assessment. You are not waiting for a GP appointment — you are seen by a specialist in acute care.

Onsite X-Ray and CT — Same Visit

If your injury requires imaging, X-ray and CT are available onsite during the same visit. This eliminates the delay of attending a separate radiology provider — which for a worker on restricted duties or no current work capacity, means faster diagnosis, faster treatment, and a faster return-to-work pathway.

Certificate of Capacity — Same Day

Your certificate of capacity is issued on the day of your initial presentation. This means your employer receives the documentation they need to manage your duties, and WorkCover Queensland receives the medical evidence they need to process your claim — without waiting days for a GP appointment.

Full Documentation — One Visit

SmartCare UrgentCare prepares all required WorkCover documentation at your initial visit:

  • Certificate of capacity — fitness for work determination
  • Clinical notes — injury mechanism, examination findings, diagnosis, and management plan
  • Imaging reports — if X-ray or CT is performed
  • Treatment plan — including follow-up requirements, physiotherapy referral, and expected recovery timeframe
  • Employer communication — clear information about suitable duties and restrictions

No Appointment Needed

Workplace injuries do not follow appointment schedules. Walk in to SmartCare UrgentCare any day of the week — including evenings and weekends — with no appointment required. The sooner the injury is assessed and documented, the sooner the WorkCover claim can progress.

Open 7 Days

Workplace injuries can occur at any time — including weekends, public holidays, and evening shifts. SmartCare UrgentCare is open 7 days a week. You do not need to wait until Monday for a GP appointment to start your WorkCover claim.

Return to Work — Our Approach

The goal of WorkCover injury management is safe, sustainable return to work. Delayed return to work is associated with poorer health outcomes, longer recovery times, and higher claim costs — for the worker, the employer, and the insurer.

SmartCare UrgentCare approaches return to work as an active clinical goal from day one:

  • Certificate of capacity at first presentation — setting the baseline for return-to-work planning
  • Suitable duties identification — working with you and your employer to identify modified duties that support recovery while keeping you at work where safe to do so
  • Progressive upgrade — updating your certificate of capacity as your condition improves, progressively increasing duties toward full pre-injury capacity
  • Rehabilitation referral — physiotherapy, exercise physiology, or other rehabilitation services as clinically indicated
  • Specialist referral — orthopaedic, neurosurgical, or pain medicine referral where the injury requires specialist management
  • Clear communication — with your employer, WorkCover Queensland, and any rehabilitation provider involved in your care
