What Does an X-Ray Show?

X-ray is the most commonly used medical imaging technique. It uses a small, controlled dose of radiation to produce images of bones, joints, and certain soft tissue structures. X-ray is fast, non-invasive, and widely available — making it the first-line imaging test for many clinical presentations.

X-ray can assess:

• Bones — fractures, dislocations, alignment, degeneration, and bone lesions
• Joints — arthritis, joint space narrowing, effusions, and alignment
• Chest — lung infections, pneumonia, fluid around the lungs, heart size, and rib fractures
• Abdomen — bowel obstruction, foreign bodies, and certain abdominal conditions
• Spine — vertebral fractures, alignment, disc space narrowing, and scoliosis
• Sinuses — sinusitis and sinus opacification
• Dental and facial — jaw fractures and dental assessment (limited)

X-ray is particularly effective for assessing bones and the chest. For soft tissue conditions, your doctor may recommend an alternative imaging modality such as ultrasound, CT, or MRI, depending on the clinical question.

When Might You Need an X-Ray?

X-rays are requested across a wide range of clinical scenarios. Common reasons include:

Injuries and Suspected Fractures

This is the most common reason for an X-ray at SmartCare. If you have fallen, twisted an ankle, injured your wrist, or sustained an impact to any part of your body and there is pain, swelling, or difficulty moving — an X-ray can confirm or exclude a fracture within minutes.

Common injury X-rays include:

• Ankle and foot — the most frequently X-rayed body part for injuries
• Wrist and hand — falls onto an outstretched hand, sporting injuries
• Fingers and toes — jammed fingers, stubbed toes, crush injuries
• Shoulder and collarbone — falls, sporting impacts
• Knee — twisting injuries, direct impact
• Ribs — direct impact, falls, coughing-related fractures in older patients
• Elbow and forearm — falls in children, sporting injuries

Chest X-Ray

A chest X-ray is one of the most commonly performed diagnostic imaging tests. Your doctor may request a chest X-ray for:

• Persistent cough — to assess for pneumonia, bronchitis, or other lung pathology
• Shortness of breath — to evaluate the lungs and heart
• Chest pain — to exclude rib fractures, pneumothorax, or pleural effusion
• Fever with respiratory symptoms — to check for pneumonia
• Pre-operative assessment — some surgical procedures require a chest X-ray beforehand
• Monitoring known conditions — such as heart failure or chronic lung disease

Back and Spine

X-ray of the spine can assess vertebral alignment, fractures, disc space narrowing, and degenerative changes. Spinal X-rays are commonly requested for:

• Back pain following injury — falls, lifting incidents, motor vehicle accidents
• Chronic back pain — to assess for structural causes
• Neck pain — after whiplash or trauma
• Scoliosis assessment — particularly in adolescents

Children

X-ray is safe and commonly used in children. Paediatric X-rays at SmartCare are performed by experienced radiographers using age-appropriate protocols and the lowest possible radiation dose. The most common paediatric X-rays are for limb injuries from falls, playground accidents, and sporting activities.

Walk-In X-Ray at SmartCare UrgentCare

If you have sustained an injury, you do not need a GP referral to have an X-ray at SmartCare UrgentCare. Walk in to our Springfield Central clinic and our emergency specialist team will assess your injury. If X-ray is clinically indicated, it is performed during the same visit — you do not need to leave the clinic, attend a separate radiology provider, or wait for an appointment.

This is one of the key advantages of SmartCare UrgentCare over a standard GP clinic or after-hours service. When you attend a GP with a suspected fracture, you are typically referred to an external radiology provider for imaging — adding hours or days to your diagnosis. At SmartCare, the X-ray is taken, reviewed by your emergency specialist, and discussed with you in the same visit.

GP-Referred X-Ray at SmartCare Diagnostics

If your GP or specialist has referred you for an X-ray, you can attend SmartCare Diagnostics at Springfield Central with your referral. X-ray services are available for all body regions and are bulk billed for eligible Medicare cardholders.

To book a GP-referred X-ray:

• Bring your referral, Medicare card, and any previous imaging if relevant
• Most X-ray appointments are available within 1 to 2 days
• Results are reported by a specialist radiologist and sent to your referring doctor, typically within 24 hours

What Happens During an X-Ray?

An X-ray is quick, painless, and non-invasive. The entire process typically takes 10 to 15 minutes, including positioning.

• You will be asked to remove any jewellery, metal objects, or clothing from the area being imaged
• The radiographer will position you — standing, sitting, or lying down depending on the body part
• A lead apron may be placed over areas not being imaged to minimise radiation exposure
• You will be asked to stay very still for a few seconds while the image is captured
• Multiple views may be taken from different angles to give a complete picture
• The images are available immediately for review

At SmartCare UrgentCare, your emergency specialist reviews the images with you during the same visit and explains the findings. At SmartCare Diagnostics, the images are reported by a specialist radiologist and the report is sent to your referring doctor.

Is X-Ray Safe?

X-ray uses a very low dose of ionising radiation. The dose from a standard limb X-ray is extremely small — comparable to the natural background radiation you receive in a few hours of normal daily life. Modern X-ray equipment uses dose-reduction technology to minimise exposure.

The clinical benefit of X-ray imaging — confirming or excluding a fracture, diagnosing pneumonia, assessing chest symptoms — far outweighs the minimal radiation exposure in the vast majority of clinical scenarios.

For pregnant patients or patients who may be pregnant, please advise the clinical team before the X-ray. Alternative imaging may be considered depending on the clinical urgency and the body region being assessed.

X-Ray for Children

X-ray is safe and routinely used in children. SmartCare uses paediatric-specific protocols that minimise radiation dose while producing high-quality diagnostic images. Children are the most commonly X-rayed patient group at SmartCare UrgentCare — primarily for limb injuries from falls, sport, and playground activities.

Parents are welcome to stay with their child during the X-ray. A lead apron will be provided for the accompanying parent.

X-Ray and WorkCover

If you have been injured at work and require X-ray imaging as part of your assessment, this is available onsite at SmartCare UrgentCare during the same visit. Your emergency specialist will determine whether X-ray is clinically indicated, perform the assessment, and issue WorkCover documentation including certificate of capacity.

The facility fee is waived for eligible WorkCover patients.

X-Ray and Defence / DVA

ADF personnel and eligible DVA White Card holders can access X-ray services at SmartCare UrgentCare. The facility fee is waived for eligible Defence and veteran patients. ADF personnel should call 1800IMSICK (1800 467 425) to obtain a DAN before attending.

When X-Ray Is Not Enough

X-ray is excellent for assessing bones, joints, and the chest — but it has limitations. Soft tissue injuries (ligaments, tendons, muscles), disc injuries in the spine, and many abdominal conditions are not well visualised on X-ray.

If your emergency specialist or GP determines that X-ray does not provide sufficient information, they may recommend:

• CT scan — provides detailed cross-sectional images, available onsite at SmartCare Springfield for bones, chest, abdomen, and vascular assessment
• Ultrasound — for soft tissue injuries, abdominal organs, and vascular assessment
• MRI — for ligament, tendon, disc, and detailed soft tissue assessment (external referral)

At SmartCare UrgentCare, if your X-ray is normal but your emergency specialist suspects a condition that X-ray cannot detect, they will arrange the appropriate next step — whether that is onsite CT or a referral for external imaging.

Bulk Billing

For eligible Medicare cardholders, X-ray services at SmartCare are bulk billed. There is no out-of-pocket cost for the imaging component of your visit.

At SmartCare UrgentCare, the X-ray is bulk billed and the consultation fee is billed separately as a private consultation with a Medicare rebate. At SmartCare Diagnostics, the X-ray is bulk billed with a valid GP or specialist referral.
