When to head to SmartCare UrgentCare

Children can become unwell quickly, and it is not easy to know if symptoms can wait. SmartCare UrgentCare can assess urgent, non-life-threatening concerns like:

  • Fever that is persistent, hard to manage or worrying you
  • Cough, wheeze or mild to moderate breathing symptoms
  • Ear pain, sore throat, flu symptoms or swollen glands
  • Vomiting, diarrhoea or early signs of dehydration
  • A child drinking less, feeding poorly or weeing less than usual
  • Sudden rashes, skin infections or mild allergic reactions
  • Abdominal pain that is concerning but not severe
  • Cuts, wounds or lacerations needing attention
  • Minor burns, bites or skin injuries
  • Falls, sports injuries, sprains or strains
  • Head bumps where your child is alert and otherwise stable

If your baby is under 6 months old and has a fever of 38°C or higher, please go directly to the nearest Emergency Department or call 000.

Check over

Look and listen to their breathing, notice alertness, fluid intake, urine output, pain, temperature and if they seem unusually drowsy or distressed.

Make some notes

Write down when symptoms started, any medicines given and when, recent injuries, allergies, medical conditions and if symptoms are improving or worsening.

When to go directly to the Emergency Department

Go directly to your nearest Emergency Department or call 000 if your child has:

  • Severe breathing difficulty
  • Blue lips, grey skin or severe drowsiness
  • A seizure, unconsciousness or is hard to wake
  • Severe dehydration, such as little to no urination, extreme weakness or inability to keep fluids down
  • A baby under 6 months with a fever of 38°C or higher
  • Major trauma or serious head injury
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • A severe allergic reaction, facial or throat swelling or trouble breathing
  • Uncontrollable bleeding
  • A serious burn
  • Symptoms that feel unsafe to manage outside hospital
